Aha

Editor, Daily News:

Some Democrats have now admitted the purpose behind “Obamacare” was not so much health care but wealth redistribution.

Surprise, surprise! Wealth redistribution has long been an objective of the left. Now we learn from a recent Associated Press article that “tax day is a dreaded deadline for millions, but for nearly half of U.S. households, it’s simply somebody else’s problem. ... About 47 percent will pay no federal income taxes at all for 2009.”

Years ago, former U.S. Sen. Phil Gramm frequently talked about how it’s easier to ride in the wagon than it is to pull it. His point was that there are two kinds of citizens: the unproductive who ride in the wagon and the productive who pull it. Now, nearly half of all Americans are receiving a free ride on the backs of those who work hard and pay the taxes. At some point some of those struggling to pull the wagon will look back at those riding in it and decide to join them. Eventually the wagon stops.

Unfortunately, the Democratic Party is working hard to get as many people dependent on big government as possible. As the party of big government, Democrats prosper politically as they buy the votes of the growing dependent class by redistributing money extracted from the shrinking productive class.

Alexis de Tocqueville summed up this problem 150 years ago: “The American republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public’s money.”
